Credit scores over 720 had an average low APR of 4.3% on a conventional 30-year mortgage. Yet over 29% of Americans have a score under 620. If your business is selling homes then you are faced with an unprecedented pool of unqualified buyers that you must capture. Zillow chief economist Stan Humphries said homes are more affordable than in years, plus interest rates are at record lows. "But the irony here is that so many Americans can't qualify for these low rates, or can't qualify...at all." It costs more to live with bad credit than it does to improve your credit score. By one estimate, the cost to the average consumer is $3000 per year. Large deposits, high interest rates, absurd insurance rates,and lost employment opportunities are just a few of the challenges that low credit scores bring. Over the past decade, American's college graduation rates have been surpassed by other nations. Though more than 40 percent of U.S. adults aged 25-34 hold post-secondary degrees, that rate pales in comparison to nations like Canada, South Korea and Russia which rank 1st, 2nd and 3rd and all boasting graduation rates above 55 percent. Last year, President Obama called for the United States to boost its college graduation rates by 2020. Next month, he will convene a national youth summit in an effort to engage high school students in a multi-media exchange about how they think the country should improve its graduation rates.
